Tropical Storm Jelawat has weakened into a tropical depression. At 8 p.m., Jelawat was centred about 150 kilometres south-southeast of Zhanjian. It is forecast to move northwest at about 15 kilometres per hour skirting northeastern Hainan and moving towards Leizhou Peninsula.

THE STANDBY SIGNAL, NO. 1 IS IN FORCE.

THIS MEANS THAT A TROPICAL CYCLONE NOW CENTRED WITHIN ABOUT 800 KILOMETRES OF HONG KONG MAY AFFECT US.

JELAWAT HAS INTENSIFIED TO A TROPICAL STORM.

AT 10 P.M. THE CENTRE OF JELAWAT WAS ESTIMATED TO BE ABOUT 470 KILOMETRES SOUTH OF HONG KONG (NEAR 18.1 DEGREES NORTH 113.6 DEGREES EAST) AND IS FORECAST TO MOVE NORTHWEST AT ABOUT 15 KILOMETRES PER HOUR TOWARDS WESTERN PART OF GUANGDONG.

Today's Weather

An easterly airstream was prevailing over the coastal areas of Guangdong. Locally in Hong Kong, there were sunny periods today. Isolated thundery showers developed during the day and more than 30 millimetres of rainfall were recorded in the northern part of the New Territories, western part of Hong Kong Island and the central part of Kowloon. The Pacific ridge is expected to extend westwards in the latter part of the week and bring generally fine weather to southern China.

An active trough of low pressure brought unsettled weather to the coastal areas of Guangdong today. Locally, the thundery showers this morning brought more than 50 millimetres of rainfall to Kowloon, the western part of Hong Kong Island, Tsuen Wan and the northern part of Lantau Island. While those recorded at Sha Tin and Kowloon Tong even exceeded 100 millimetres. The trough of low pressure is expected to weaken gradually in the next couple of days.
