Today's Weather

Under the influence of the outer subsiding air of Severe Tropical Storm Bilis, locally it was sunny and very hot today. The maximum temperature recorded at the Observatory in the afternoon was 34.0 degrees, the highest so far this year. Temperatures over parts of the New Territories even reached 36 degrees. The rainband associated with Bilis is expected to bring heavy rain to the south China coastal areas over the weekend.

At 11 p.m., Severe Tropical Storm Bilis was centred about 40 kilometres east-southeast of Taibei. It is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour, skirting the northern part of Taiwan and moving towards the coast of southeastern China.

Mainly cloudy with scattered showers and squally thunderstorms. Showers will become more frequent later. Temperatures will range between 27 and 31 degrees. Moderate to fresh westerly winds.

The weather was generally fine apart from isolated showers over southern China today. Locally, it was sunny and temperatures over parts of the New Territories rose to 34 degrees in the afternoon. At 11 p.m., Severe Tropical Storm Bilis was centred about 450 kilometres southeast of Taibei. It is forecast to move northwest or west-northwest at about 20 kilometres per hour towards Taiwan. The outer circulation of Bilis is expected to bring heavy rain to southern China over the weekend.

An active trough of low pressure brought unsettled weather to the coastal areas of Guangdong today. Locally, the thundery showers this morning brought more than 50 millimetres of rainfall to Kowloon, the western part of Hong Kong Island, Tsuen Wan and the northern part of Lantau Island. While those recorded at Sha Tin and Kowloon Tong even exceeded 100 millimetres. The trough of low pressure is expected to weaken gradually in the next couple of days.
